A Tangle of Tulips

The lovely tulips that inspired this painting were a gift from my daughter and placed in a very plain tubular glass vase, which with the gladioli buds immortalised in an earlier painting 'Floral Pedestal' here were a gift from my other daughter. The pink and blue flower pattern in the background of 'A Tangle of Tulips' was copied from the printed cellophane wrapper that came with the flowers! Click the images to enlarge.

PS 'Floral Pedestal' is currently exhibited in the Spring Exhibition at Penwith Society of Arts, Back Road West, St Ives.

  1. I love the soft colours and light in this painting Lesley. Your vase definitely looks as if it is standing by a window overlooking the sea.

  2. Thanks Jill! It was painted by a window, although not overlooking the sea, but the blue worked somehow. The artwork is rendered in oil on primed board without preliminary drawings - I just launch in loosely with the paint and add detail in subsequent layers. x

  3. I think it's beautiful. I adore that teal colour you've used.

  4. Hi Emma, thanks - how are you? The teal colour comes from a mixture of varying amounts of Viridian, Prussian Blue, Paynes Grey and Titanium White. x

  5. I love the "tangling" that goes on once the stems hit the vase. I sat looking at it and guessed it had to be rendered in oil................... yummy!

  6. Lovely painting - the colours are wonderful with the calm turquoise given a 'ping' by the yellow tulips.

  7. Thanks Cathy and Caroline, I enjoyed doing it. Have a good day, Lesley x

  8. tangled tulips . . . a poetic title and it's a beautiful painting~!~

  9. This really lovely too and the piece of patterning at the top corner really draws your attention to the flower heads. Gorgeous colours Lesley.

  10. The wrap was so pretty that I had to find a way to include it somehow! Thanks Cathy.
