Sea Originals

Off to the framers today with 'Bright Day, Wild Sea' SOLD  below, which is painted on primed board in oil, worked with roller, knife and brush.  The strong sky colour has come from the excess paint mixed to 'rejuvenate' a tired abstract!  Painting measures 46 x 30.5 cm.   'Brisk Breeze at the Beach'  is smaller, 19 x 15 cm (though looks the same size here).  It's another reworked piece - surprise, surprise, I'm a big fan of reuse - features heavy impasto and is rendered on primed and under-painted MDF.   SOLD Click to enlarge.  Copyright Lesley Ninnes.

Force of Calm

Here's my most recent abstract, the 'Force of Calm' a reworked painting in oil on deep edge canvas, 70 x 50 cm.  Now part of the current exhibition at Art Space Gallery.   Detailed views are included to show texture and paint effects  Click to enlarge Andrea at   Dream Art Smart Art  has linked to this post  - why not click the link and pay her a visit - see you in September, Andrea. x Copyright Lesley Ninnes.

First Original Seascapes for July

Only two paintings to show today - one of which has already sold at Art Space .  I don't have any in reserve and there are none 'in progress'.  The earliest opportunity to make a start on new boards will not be until Wednesday!!!  Might be an idea to start several - six seems a good number.........  Now, are there enough primed boards? 'Sun on the Waves' 12.5 x 12.5 cm, oil on board.   SOLD 'Waves Right There' 12.5 x 12.5 cm, oil on board.   SOLD Click to enlarge.  Copyright Lesley Ninnes

Georgie Benjamin - Legend

Unwelcome reading on the cover of the latest edition of 'The St Helena Connection' the official news magazine of the Society of Friends of St Helena which arrived last week. I was introduced to Georgie by agronomist Richard Gillett in early 1985 after expressing an interest in painting the wild flowers of St Helena, the South Atlantic island that was my home from October 1984 -  October 1987.  Our first outing took us part way along the uneven rocky route to Lots Wife Ponds on the Sandy Bay side of the Island and we weren't successful on that day in finding an example of 'Babies Toes' or 'Old Man Live Forever' or maybe even the 'Salad Plant'.  Can't remember in truth what we were looking for now - but I do remember the feeling of anticipation and adventure and the sun and 'newness' of being out in the open air in such a different landscape. Subsequently, Georgie showed me where all the different flowering endemic plant s...

'Down the Rabbit Hole' Summer Tour

My nephew James Inkson is performing in a summer tour production entitled 'Down the Rabbit Hole' with  Skewbald Theatre   a company known for creating 'theatrical experiences in green spaces and unusual places'.   As the first performances were to be held here in Cornwall, albeit a 2 hour drive away at Mount Edgecumbe estate on the Rame Peninsula, we decided that we must go to see him in action!   On arrival we noted that there was a weekend 'Faerie Fest' in progress - it felt a bit like how I imagine Glastonbury music festival to be as there were cars, tents and people everywhere and even some mud (not a lot fortunately) owing to county-wide wind and torrential rain the day before! What soon became apparent was that the production was being staged as one of the Faerie Fest events - James could have warned us, as we looked a lot out of place!  To be fair (sorry) the fancy dress wings, wands and tiaras in my attic would not have 'cut the musta...
